OUR STORY

indiGINous was crafted to give local and international travellers a true taste of the diversity that South Africa offers.

Founded by Kirsty Pienaar and Saskia Brown in late 2021, both with a tourism marketing background, in partnership with award-winning distillers Blomendahl, indiGINous embodies our true passion for discovering the country, along with an understanding and appreciation of the intricate craft of distilling premium gin.

TWENTY TWO BOTANICALS

Juniper Berry

Juniper is to gin what grapes are to wine. The berries from the Juniper plant are what give the distinctive taste and are required by law to be the core botanical in any drink that wants to call itself gin.

Spekboom

A succulent native to South Africa, deemed a miracle plant by many. Also referred to as elephant bush as it is what elephants love most, it is able to store vast amounts of carbon and has a citrusy flavour.

Confetti bush

A member of the indigenous fynbos family, the fine evergreen foliage has a sweet honey scent. Ancient and modern uses of the plant have also described it as a remedy for colds, fever and diabetes.

Cape Aloe

Indigenous to South Africa, the plant has been used since ancient times as a generic chemopreventive and anti-tumour remedy in folk medicine and it has a well-documented history of use as an anti-inflammatory.

Kapokbos

Kapokbos means “snow bush”. The leave of this attractive, evergreen aromatic shrub are a good substitute for the well-known herb Rosemary. Indigenous to the Eastern Cape, Northern Cape and Western Cape.

Fynbos

The name originates from an Old Dutch word: ‘fine bush’. The Cape Floral Kingdom is the smallest of the six Floral Kingdoms in the world, and is the only one contained in its entirety within a single country.

Lemon

Lemon juice has many uses, from culinary to medicinal. Lemon juice is a natural cleaner, is high in vitamin C and contains powerful nutrients. The combination of Spekboom and lemon provide the ‘zest’ in this gin

Angelica root

Angelica is earthy, slightly sweet with a subtle spiciness, at times a little bitter, and may present a hint of liquorice flavour. Angelica is sometimes described as having a flavour similar to that of juniper berries

Cardamom

Cardamom has a strong, complex aroma and a flavour that is warm, sweet and spicy with notes of lemon, smoke and mint. It also has medicinal properties and can be used for colds, sore mouth and throat.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon is a spice obtained from the inner bark of several tree species. It is rich in antioxidants and other beneficial compounds and has a sweet and woody flavour, similar to that of cloves, with a slight citrusy note.

      Palate

      Complex yet gentle, indiGINous Zest encapsulates an indigenous blend of fynbos botanicals with a dash of citrus notes coming through, marrying the best of both flavour profiles.

      The Process

      100% distilled in a copper pot still, twenty-two locally sourced botanicals and fresh spring water from Elgin’s mountains combine to create a gin of outstanding flavour and smoothness.

      Botanicals

      A bouquet of twenty-two botanicals, selected from the floral kingdoms of the Western and Eastern Cape, with Spekboom (Portulacaria afra) as the signature botanical. Its juicy leaves offer a hint of citrus on the palate, complemented by Kapokbos, Slangbos, Confetti Bush and Cape Aloe, amongst other.

      Celebrating South Africa

      A premium, handcrafted 100% distilled gin that pays homage to the rich diversity of South Africa and its indigenous ingredients. Smooth and silky, subtly traditionalised by Juniper and floral undernotes define this dry style gin.

      Garnish

      Best enjoyed neat, on the rocks or with tonic, a sprig of Spekboom and a curl of lime or lemon rind.
